Theory of Relativity

Its been a long time since I posted my last blog. So many blogs in "Drafts" but I have been just lazy not to finish them. But every now then I see an inspiration around me that makes want to share it with you all.

It was a late evening in the scorching heat of Delhi in the month of May and I was sitting in the waiting room of Nizamuddin Railway Station waiting for arrival of my train back home. The waiting room was a mini India where people from all parts of the country where waiting to catch their train. Amidst the chaos in the waiting room, walks in a skinny old man in his late 70s carrying a bunch of baggage lock chains and repair tools in his hand with a backpack. His face was wrinkled and body was bent but there was no sign of tiredness on his face. The temperature on that day in Delhi was over 45 degree Celsius and still hadn't cooled down in the evening. Whole Delhi was exhausted from the heat including me, except this old man who had a charm of a young man on his face with a big smile that still makes me wonder how can that smile be real?

The old man walked around the hall offering to repair trolleys, zips and chain locks. A while later, he sat down on floor at the corner of the room, packed all of his things into the backpack. He then opened bunch of notes from his pocket to count his day's earnings and put them in an envelope which also he put into his bag and walked out the room with a same big smile.

The reason why I am sharing my this experience is that none of the faces in that room had a smile but that man. His smile was contagious and a sign of content. Makes me wonder how can a man living in his 70s earning daily bread by selling petty things at a railway station be happy or content when people earning lakhs in their 30s are frustrated and unhappy?

With the society surrounding us filled with unrealistic expectations, greed, fear of missing out, anxiety, stress and what not, there comes a reminder every now and then telling us that we are chasing wrong things. That old man's smile is one such thing.

Any person in life will always compare himself / herself to the person who according to them are leading a better life. A better life may be in terms of money, wealth, health, popularity, etc.

Relativity is defined as the quality of being relative and having significance only in relation to something else. We are pursuing happiness in life by comparing ourselves with others. Whereas, in my opinion the real happiness in ones life should not arise because of comparison with others. It is a common tendency of individuals to compare themselves to others in various aspects of life.

Social media and societal expectations often present a distorted version of reality, leading to unrealistic standards of success and happiness. What we see of others may not be a true reflection of their lives. Every persons journey is different having their own difficulties and struggles. Don't compare your progress with others. Start with little steps today towards breaking habit of comparison and suffering to see the real happiness unfolding in your life.

In a world where comparison seems to be the norm, it's essential to remember that happiness and fulfillment cannot be found in the pursuit of someone else's life. Embracing your journey and refraining from constant comparison is a powerful act of self-love and self-acceptance. Let us unshackle ourselves from the burden of comparison. Remember, you are incomparable and that's what make you extraordinary.

Until next blog, Ciao!

  1. Yes, we are living in a relative, competitive and comparable society. We feel insecure without comparison. We told to compare our life with others from early childhood by parents teachers and society. We realize the reality after about 60 or 70 years of age which is too late. Even then we will not teach our youngsters about this and in fact we promote relativity.
    The life goes on.......
