The Society of Sophisticated Lies

Movies play a vital role in our society. Some movies or scenes from movies make a big impact on our lives. One such movie scene in my life is an old 80’s Kannada movie named Rama-Lakshmana. Although I don’t recall the whole movie, there is this song titled “Nodiddu Sullagabahudu” (which means whatever you see could be false) that had a great impact on me. This song which is in a “Katha Roopaka” form, narrates a story of a woman called Gangamma. Some of you might have had this story in your school book.

The story briefly goes like this: Gangamma decides to go out and fetch water from outside. But seeing her baby sleeping she calls out mongoose and tells it to take care of the baby. After a while when Gangamma returns, she sees the mongoose standing at the door with blood around its mouth. She immediately concludes that the mongoose had killed her baby and kills the mongoose. She then rushes inside to see the baby. She is shocked to see that the baby is laughing in the cradle and a dead cobra is lying near the baby. By the time she realizes that she made a mistake it was too late. The mongoose is dead.

We as humans have a tendency to react out of emotions instead of thinking and finding out what could be the reality. And why not? Because it’s lots easier and simpler to jump to a conclusion than to give it a thought, isn’t it! So easy to capitalize on this behavior. Just forward a fake message playing with people's emotions on social media or WhatsApp groups and see what happens? Rarely anybody will check for its truth.

These days most people are not interested in the truth if it is not sensational. Hence, come the lies that everyone believes to be true. And then there are multiple truths, everyone has their own version of the truth. There are now multiple forms of truth. You may say everyone is right in their own perspective but, everyone can’t be true. Both are different.

We are now surrounded by so many sophisticated lies that are so convincing that people don’t believe the truth. As a matter of fact, it has become very difficult to distinguish the truth from the lies. Society actually has become so fake that truth bothers the people. So most of them ignore it. To quote John F. Kennedy, “No matter how big the lie; repeat it often enough and the masses will regard it as the truth.” But, truth is the truth even if no one believes it to be.

When everybody is happy with the lies what is the problem you may ask. The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it. However, truth doesn’t cease to exist just because they are ignored. These lies which create a fake bubble around us, will one day burst and when it does, we will stand naked in front of truth.

A day will come when people will start craving for something that is real, honest, and true. Hope we are not too far away from the truth then.

Truth is bitter but it’s necessary.

What do you think?

Until next time...  Ciao...
